Adventure HotelThe Mercury reports that a new hotel in Cape Town provides
for guests who feel like climbing the wall! The Extreme
Hotel is the first of a new international hotel chain aimed
specifically at extreme sports enthusiasts, and has a five-
story climbing wall on offer. It was launched by Protea
Hotels.
Details of this new lifestyle brand were announced at the
World Travel Market in London, one of the leading trade
shows in the world.
The idea was the brainchild of Al Gosling, the chief
executive of the Extreme group which founded the
internationally watched Extreme Sports TV channel.
The brand targets the growing market of extreme sports
enthusiasts, estimated at 165 million, who Duke, Protea's
brand marketing manager, described as 'young at heart but
not necessarily the backpacker market - people who are
successful in business but go in for extreme sports that
are not always cheap, such as abseiling, mountain biking,
water skiing, big wave riding.'
He said the 130 rooms in the new Cape Town hotel in Bree
Street offered all the latest technology, including
wireless hot spots, and aimed at the 3-4 star market.
The five-star climbing wall on its faÇade had been tested
and graded by experienced climbers.
The new group had initial funding of up to R2.8 billion to
acquite and build hotels for the Extreme chain. The
locations would be focused around three main environments -
surf, snow and cities where extreme sprots were part of the
local culture, such as Cape Town, Rio de Janeiro and Sydney.
Protea is the largest hotel operating company in Africa.
So - when can we expect one in Durban?
