Champing at the Bit for the Durban July

It's all systems go for the Durban's premier horse race - the Vodacom Durban July, to be held this Saturday at the Greyville Race Course. The weather is set to be a perfect Durban 'winter's' day, warm and clear, the very same weather that's playing havoc with the Sardine Run because of the high sea temperatures.

Anyone driving past Greyville will be able to see the massive tent town which has sprung up in preparation for the thousands of people who are set to attend the event. An estimated 55 000 people will be enjoying the race - and the crowds - as this event also attracts the highly fashion conscious.

All these people descending on the race course and enjoying the event include Olympic gold medallist Ryk Neethling, and singer Yvonne Chaka Chaka, plus a host of other recognizeable VIPs.

It is estimated that approximately R80 million will be spent on the catering, fashion and entertainment for this event, but that also the event would add substantially to the coffers of the city. This income accrues from punters, accommodation for out-of-towners, 'July Outfits' and so on.
