BUMPER EASTER SEASON FOR THE ZULU KINGDOM

This year’s Easter holiday season is expected to attract well over a million tourists into the Zulu Kingdom, and injecting over R1 billion into the province’s economy.

These are the projections made by Tourism KwaZulu-Natal CEO, Mr Miller Matola, who said the provincial tourism marketing body estimated that at least 1.15 million domestic tourists and about 50 000 international tourists will visit destinations in KwaZulu-Natal over the Easter holiday period.

The expected total economic impact as a result of spend by domestic tourists is in excess of R0.71 billion, while that of the international tourists is estimated at R0.36 billion.

Matola said Easter is the second most important tourism season in KwaZulu-Natal after the festive season.

“Last year in the order of 1 million domestic and international tourists visited the province, with most of the destinations throughout the province - from the Elephant Coast to the Midlands - reporting higher tourism activity. This indicates that more tourists are taking advantage of the less frequently visited destinations and seeking experiences other than a beach holiday,” he said.

The Zulu Kingdom will celebrate the Easter holidays just a month after recognising service excellence in tourism and encouraging all within the industry to fly the Zulu Kingdom flag high by giving tourists visiting the province experiences beyond expectations.

“KwaZulu-Natal remains a leader as the most sought after domestic tourism destination, with the latest domestic tourism arrival statistics showing that we have the lion’s share of this domestic tourism market at 34%.

“While these are very exciting figures, we do not want to make the mistake of being complacent and as such will soon be rolling out a much more aggressive marketing drive targeting both our domestic and international markets,” he said.

This Easter the calendar boasts the annual Splashy Fen music festival in the Drakensberg, the Moscow Circus at Durban’s Suncoast Casino, the Umhlanga Sunshine Beach Festival and a host of sporting events. Visitors will be truly spoilt for choice right across the province.
