Wetlands 101 for KZN

Kosi Bay - Lake Sibaya - Sodwana Bay - uMkhuze - False Bay - Lake St. Lucia - Mapelane - Cape Vidal Into the classroom for Wetland 101

In a bid to increase knowledge about the Wetland Park, an information handbook and introductory course is being developed by the Wetland Park Authority.

Wetland 101 is aimed at improving the Wetland Park experience

This is aimed at tourists, tourist guides, educators, learners and tertiary education students as it will cover the ecological and socio-cultural aspects of the area. Posters and themed brochures will enhance the original text.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal's Centre for Environmental Management , which won the tender for the project, will first source written information and then fill identify any gaps which should be filled through the Wetland Park's oral history programme which looks at the stories from communities living in and around the Park.

"Wetlands 101 is going to provide updated and accurate info about the Park, ranging from social to natural and historical to contemporary, for the first time." Says Prof. Di Scott of CEM.

The handbook will also be used for a specialist training course for tour operators, tourist guides and Wetland Park staff.

"It is intended over time that all Park concessionaires, approved tourism operators and tourist guides take this course, to ensure they are able to convey accurate and interesting information about the Park and its World Heritage values," said Andrew Zaloumis, CEO of the Wetland Authority.
