Amashovashova Time Again - Get CyclingLess than a week to go to KwaZulu-Natal's biggest cycle
race, the Pick 'n Pay Amashovashova. The race is one of the
most popular ones in the province, as well as one of the
toughest.
The course follows the famous Comrades Marathon route from
Pietermaritzburg to Durban. There have been some changes to
the overall route this year.
This Sunday the route will repeat last year's route, and
will not be routed through central Hillcrest. It will also
bypass central Pinetown and instead of using Old Main Road
through Pinetown and Cowies Hill, will stay on the M13.
The Durban-bound lanes of the M13 from Kassier Road turnoff
at Shongweni will be closed to traffic from 6am for the
race.
The cut-off time at the Inchanga Caravan Park is 10.45am,
after which the R103 will return to normal use. The same
applies to Botha's Hill at 11.30am, and the M13 to 45th
Cutting will be re-opened at 1pm.
The race also contributes substantially to the tourism
coffers of the province. Conservative estimates indicate
that the race brings in some R60 million. With around 75%
of the cyclists coming down from Gauteng, thousands of
participants, spectators, friends and family make use of
KZN accommodation, restaurants and attractions that are on
offer in the province.
The province is ready for an exciting event with more than
8000 riders cycle the Road of Champions, further
entrenching the Zulu Kingdom's reputation as the sporting
capital of South Africa. | |
