Steaming Through Eshayamoya CountryMore than 200 people packed on to the Creighton-based
Eshayamoya Express steam train recently to celebrate the
restored train's first public outing.
The steam train took the excited passengers on a two and a
half hour return trip through spectacular scenery to the
timber siding of Riverside, deep in the southern districts
of KwaZulu-Natal.
The train was bought and restored by the Ingwe District
Municipality aiming to establish railway tourism in the
area as well as to open up greater economic advantages and
opportunities in the area. The train will operate on the
borad-gauge Cape-Natal line and complements the Paton Coun
try Narrow-Gauge Railwa which already has a steam train
running tourist excursions from the tiny town of Ixopo.
It is intended that there will eventually be 10 steam
trains operating in a 200 km radius between
Pietermaritzburg, the capital of KwaZulu-Natal, and
Matatiele, taking in Creighton, Underberg, Kokstad and
Ixopo - a delightful image for all those steam train
enthusiasts worldwide.
